Any tips on finishing a huge book (700-1000 pages)? – TheBookSwarm (2024)

Tiffany

Keep going. :p You don’t want to lose momentum.

Melanie

I’m reading one now. It’s good, but really, really long. 800+ pages. I just treat it like delicate, expensive box of chocolates: just a small piece at a time.

Susan

One chapter at a time. Don’t get caught up in the size, but rather the story.
Just plug along.

Stephanie

Ellen

What I do is commit to read for one hour a day. One hour. You can do anything for a single hour, right? Usually I’ll want to go longer but the hardest part is buckling down. If you can make a time commitment every single day – one that is manageable for you, not overly ambitious – you will make progress quickly.

Lydia

Pay no attention to the page count. Enjoy it, you’ll be through it in no time.

Wali

Stop reading it…

Annette

I can’t do it, too many pages for me.

Susan

One word at a time. ?

Meet

I’m reading one now 900+ pages it’s awesome I’m enjoying

Ayoub

Reading by start with the part or the chapter you interested in it

Jacki

If it’s a really involved story, which I’m assuming it is, bookmark any pages you think might be important plot points you might forget, or any questions you have. Just use sticky notes sticking out the side.

HAVE FUN.

Aouati

Listen to it get the audio book

Janet

Just keep going. Helps if you really like the book though.

Brianna

Take it with you everywhere. Read anytime you can. Waiting in line, in the bathroom, on lunch break, etc.

Brianna

Also, what book is it?

Susan

I wish the really long books would come in volumes. I’m older and find holding a book that big is hard on the hands and it’s heavy.

Linda

That is the main reason I got a Kindle. I love to read in bed but found it increasingly difficult to hold a very large volume. I still love and buy books but tendll to download anything over about 500 pages.

J.R.

If you don’t like it, you don’t have to read it. I love long books because when I love a book, I don’t want it to end.

Brianna

Same here.

Lynda

Same here. I’ve been known to pass up books that were too short!

Sharon

Chapter by chapter are small but worthy accomplishments…treat yourself with chocolate and wine!?

Louise

i don’t see how the length is relevent. either you’re enjoying it or you’re not. if you’re not don”the bother.

Soma

read while multi tasking.. also be obsessed by it… keep it beside your pillow.

Sudeep

I read by keeping a goal for a day. Normally, hundred pages a day if the book is fast paced or less if the book is slow paced

Alan

If it’s a good read. Then it’s not long enough….

Debasmita

Just keep on reading ?

Anne-Marie

If your not enjoying it. Stop reading it and find one where the size doesnt bother you.
A good story should pull you in ?

Patrick

It isn’t your job to plough, it is the author’s job to hook you. Either enjoy it or shelve it. Unless it is for study, then buckle down. ?

Kevin
Jean

??

Rosanne

If the story is good you won’t have a problem finishing it

Gayle

one page at a time.

Samrat

Read

Claire

One page at a time..enjoy.

Valerie

comfy chair. read.

Subhadip

Read a chapter each day.

Jean

Been thinking about Hamilton biography but afraid I won’t be able to finish it before I get bored

Mari

Figure out what happens in books or reading that bores you. Trying to read too long or not having all day to read. The style or the content. The writer’s attitude—too depressing, too cheery, too cynical? I have a poor visual imagination. I have more fun with some books if I look at relevant pictures first—buildings, furniture, clothes, portraits. I mean, honestly, how else can I picture a dragoon?

Eileen

Get the audiobook, if you can, and you can listen to some of it in your car. I did that with I Know This Much is True by Wally Lamb.

Lena

Me too!

Eileen

That was a great book!

Lisa

I set a goal of a chapter a night for myself…

Patricia

I remember the summer I decided I was going to read Moby Dick and I set myself up to read one chapter a day. I finished it. Moby Dick is not particularly long, but it can be challenging to those who might not be all that interested in the subject matter.

Eileen

What long book are you reading?

Eliza

Just read. 😀

Annetta

If the story grabs you and keeps you interested the pages just fly by.

Mark

Imagine it like a series you’re binge watching. Break it up and read it episodically. If the story grabs you, you will look forward to each chapter or section.

Rad

Yes. Make sure you add a full stop on the last sentence.

Sandi

Ebook or audiobook. Sometimes, really long books are daunting. Even if you’re enjoying it, you feel like you’re getting nowhere and feel overwhelmed by how many pages you have left. This is a case where eliminating the sensory cue of length is helpful.

Eli

Every page you read will leave you with one less page to read

Michelle

lol keep reading

Rennie

You can switch back and forth with reading and listening with Audible.

Sam

I loved “The Power Broker” and the 4 (waiting for 5th and final) volume “The Years of LBJ”, both by Robert Caro. All huge but the author kept my interest.

Dawna

I like the fifty pages every morning with coffee method.

Kristen

Read.

Kathy

Read a chapter at a time, or a set number of pages. Or maybe it’s just not what you want to read right now and you need to start a new one. ?

John

When I read moby Dick there were like two hundred chapters . That helped . Section It off 20-50 pages or one hour (half hour)at a time ? However, yes, all things being equal … just read it? (sorry).

Mari

I got through Moby-Dick by skipping the story and reading just the whaling chapters. ?

JonLee

Just read! Annotate if there are lots of characters, places. Enjoy!!

Bonnie

Ebook

Jason

well reading would be essential to completing the story

Yvonne

If you need tips, it must not be a very good book. Give it up.

Diane

Open book, skim read right hand page, continue through book skim reading ONLY the right hand pages…if – as you are reading a right hand page – you realize that you’ve missed something in the story you can easily read the left hand page that’s facing you. I got through some pretty tedious reading assignments in grad school that way. Have used it since for books I’m not enjoying, but feel compelled to finish.

Lena

Those are my audios!

Bonnie

I don’t struggle with books that are a chore. If the book is good, it flies by no matter how long, for example James Michener’s Hawaii is a fast read and more recently 11/23/63 by Stephen King is a page turner but I do prefer ebooks so I don’t have to hold a big book.

Marianne

Just read

Rebecca

True dat!!
As I sit here on fb instead of doing dishes. ?

Terri

Funny – for a bit I thought you meant to finish writing it! My book is half written and it’s much harder, IMHO to finish writing a book! lol!

Maryann

I just did that! Over 1000 pages. I just kept plugging along, but I did come to the conclusion it was 200 pages too long! Took me a week which is long for me. Being retired gives me lots of reading time.

Dee

One page at a time.

Cassie

I have a book I bought in 2008, I finally started it for the 4th time in 2015, and read it all the way through, mostly on a camping trip. Finally relaxed in to the story and thoroughly enjoyed it, so before I knew it, it was over and I was wanting more. I haven’t read very much since I was a teenager, but I used to be so eager to see how it ended I would skip to the end and then go back and it was never as satisfying. I have done the same thing with certain series on Netflix, or watched a part of a pilot and given up because it wasn’t exciting yet. Movies, too, I shut off. I am learning to be more patient! The Big Sick is one movie that started slow and wound up being mindblowingly good. Oh and the book was Love inthe Time of Cholera.

Katie

I don’t usually admit this but it took me two go rounds to finish A 100 Years of Solitude. I was finding it challenging then started from the beginning years later and happily finished.

Sarah

One page at a time

Agnes

Don’t start!!

Kristine

Susan

If it’s a book I don’t love, but am determined to finish, I tend to treat it like a homework assignment. Give myself a reasonable pages per day goal – while also treating myself to a book I love at the same time.

Jack

Why would you ever devote that much time to a book you don’t love?? There are so many books to love out there…

Susan

Yeah, which is why I don’t employ this strategy very often – and also why I’ve bailed out of a few book clubs ?

Cindy

If you love it, keep on reading! If not, stop! Life is too short and my to read list is too long to keep wasting time on books I don’t love

Jlynn

This is my favorite kind. Get stuck in and enjoy

Ellen

Keep reading to the end! LOL

Sue

The end.

Mike

Look at each word, in order.

Cassie

(very serious tone) otherwise, it won’t make sense.

Deena

Call in sick!!

Linda

If it’s your idea of a good book stay off the electronic device and read. If it’s not……at 55 I decided life is too short to read books that don’t interest me…..no matter what they cost or how I received the book. Works for me and it’s been almost 20 years.

Mari

Preach it, sister!

Lupita

I’m in the same boat! Reading “Drums of Autumn”, I’m on page 520, and only more than halfway through!

Amy

It’s so good!

Jonathan

Just keep going

Andrew

lightweights!!! 😉

Regiene

accompany it with an audiobook? I find it easier for me to read a book while listening to an audiobook…

Harleen

Read word by word

Katherine

One chapter at a time

Katie

Just Enjoy! 🙂

Katie

Along w/ a bag of chips and dip, lol

Mikah

When I tackle big books like that, I try to read in Kindle so the weight and length aren’t as intimidating. I also don’t pressure myself about how long it’s taking. I might have another book from an entirely different genre to read at the same time to give me some respite.

Mari

Unpaid dishwashing should be recognized as a human rights violation.

Patsy

Why bother? If it’s a struggle, move on to a good book.

Mari

If you have to read it, clock yourself on how many pages you read per hour. Budget your time accordingly.
For school, get the reading lists for courses asap and read the big bricks over break. Write a running summary across the top margins. Draw lines in yellow highlighter down the side margins by important paragraphs. Use that for review.

Pat

I love huge books!

Patricia

Don’t expect to read it all in one sitting. Put that our of your mind. Plan to read for 1-2 hours a day, whatever your schedule allows. If you know your reading speed you can plot it out, ending at chapter endings, etc. But mostly just don’t plan on reading it in a whole day.

Patricia

Also, keep notes at the end of chapters or underline so you can return to important passages later. One of the greatest pleasures is to get to the end of that tome and be able to say, “I did it. I read the whole thing.”

Linda

A woman in my book group always figured how many pages a day we had to read in order to finish in 30days. It was helpful.

Susan

I do that too.

Sabrina

Keep reading cos it’s worth it

Kimberly

Only read it if it’s GREAT – then it’s no chore. Also read it on an e-reader!

Laura

If you love the book. Relax and try to carve out a pattern in your days that allow for reading an hour or two each day. I’m assuming this isn’t something you are reading for a class.

Candice

Audiobook, double speed.

Sharron

If it’s s struggle I just don’t read it.

Monica

If the book is good, the longer, the better

Susan

The book has to engage you. Then the length is not an issue.

Deborah

Read some along!

Marscha

The Nix is over 1000 pages long–and the author makes fun of himself for writing a 1000 page book toward the end of the book through the professor character. He’s working on this book, and asks, “Who would read a book that’s 1000 pages long?” And of course, the irony is that I’m sitting and reading a book that over 1000 pages long! Fun!

Annette

Did you like it? Is it worth the time?

Louise

I could not finish it. I just did not like and couldnot relate to, or care about, the characters.

Deborah

Enjoy it. If you do, the read goes quickly and the end is mourned. Don’t enjoy the book and every page is insurmountable.

Thania

take your time, skip meaningless paragraphs, and try very hard not to feel pressured. it’s not a race

Jenna

if it’s that long make sure you’re really interested. i sucks to get halfway in and feel ambivalent about whether you want to finish. by that time you feel like your time was wasted if you stop

Jennifer

Keep going!

Linda

Use a bookmark 😀

Brian

The stand.

Brian

Plow through.

Libby

Unplug and read

Kathleen

Set aside a block of time everyday just for reading that book. That’s how I got through Anna Karenina

Jeffery

Turn the page immediately after finishing the one you just read and repeat

Laurie

Do you like the book? It shouldn’t be hard to finish a long book if you are enjoying it. If the book is dragging and all you can see is how long it is, give it up and choose a different book. Life is too short to spend time on books you don’t enjoy.

Cayleigh

One page at a time. 🙂

Patricia

One page at a time

Mindy

I read two or three chapters at a time. That way, I stay in the story and it moves right along. If it doesn’t move along, it’s not me, it’s the story.

Sharon

Read

Heather

I’ve had books that I’ve read for Book Club that were slow going. I set goals and put a bookmark in the book to mark my each day’s goal reading toward the bookmark.

Mystique

Is the story worth it?? And not bcoz everyone says it is.. But do you really feel like you should read this story. Once you are engrossed into it, 1000 pages also does not matter.

Lori

Just keep reading just keep reading ?

Cindy

Read it with someone else in pieces.

Rebecca

Audio

Michelle

If it’s not holding your interest… abort the mission. Life’s too short!

Sharron

If it doesn’t draw we in, I dump it and go to,the next one.

Rachael

I took a class in college on Victorian novels—GURL I FEEL YOU. The shortest book on the syllabus was Jane Eyre, at 400 pages. My method is just to break it down into sections, halving the page count. So for Jane Eyre, you go from 400 to 200 to 100 to 50 to 25. Use chapter breaks as pause points if/when they fit into those page brackets. So at each increment you can give yourself a little break or reward for getting that far. Hope this helps!

Michael

Just keep reading

Denise

I love epic books. Just keep reading.

Stephen

Yep, throw yourself at it every spare chance you get. Momentum. You can do it!

Liz

I have picked up audio version and alternated reading and listening. I read book while at home and continue story on audio while in the car. Kept me going. That’s how I read Hamilton and East of Eden.
