What I do is commit to read for one hour a day. One hour. You can do anything for a single hour, right? Usually I’ll want to go longer but the hardest part is buckling down. If you can make a time commitment every single day – one that is manageable for you, not overly ambitious – you will make progress quickly.
Pay no attention to the page count. Enjoy it, you’ll be through it in no time.

If it’s a really involved story, which I’m assuming it is, bookmark any pages you think might be important plot points you might forget, or any questions you have. Just use sticky notes sticking out the side.

I wish the really long books would come in volumes. I’m older and find holding a book that big is hard on the hands and it’s heavy.
That is the main reason I got a Kindle. I love to read in bed but found it increasingly difficult to hold a very large volume. I still love and buy books but tendll to download anything over about 500 pages.
If you don’t like it, you don’t have to read it. I love long books because when I love a book, I don’t want it to end.

I read by keeping a goal for a day. Normally, hundred pages a day if the book is fast paced or less if the book is slow paced

Figure out what happens in books or reading that bores you. Trying to read too long or not having all day to read. The style or the content. The writer’s attitude—too depressing, too cheery, too cynical? I have a poor visual imagination. I have more fun with some books if I look at relevant pictures first—buildings, furniture, clothes, portraits. I mean, honestly, how else can I picture a dragoon?
Get the audiobook, if you can, and you can listen to some of it in your car. I did that with I Know This Much is True by Wally Lamb.

I remember the summer I decided I was going to read Moby Dick and I set myself up to read one chapter a day. I finished it. Moby Dick is not particularly long, but it can be challenging to those who might not be all that interested in the subject matter.

Imagine it like a series you’re binge watching. Break it up and read it episodically. If the story grabs you, you will look forward to each chapter or section.

Ebook or audiobook. Sometimes, really long books are daunting. Even if you’re enjoying it, you feel like you’re getting nowhere and feel overwhelmed by how many pages you have left. This is a case where eliminating the sensory cue of length is helpful.

I loved “The Power Broker” and the 4 (waiting for 5th and final) volume “The Years of LBJ”, both by Robert Caro. All huge but the author kept my interest.

When I read moby Dick there were like two hundred chapters . That helped . Section It off 20-50 pages or one hour (half hour)at a time ? However, yes, all things being equal … just read it? (sorry).
I got through Moby-Dick by skipping the story and reading just the whaling chapters. ?

If you need tips, it must not be a very good book. Give it up.
Open book, skim read right hand page, continue through book skim reading ONLY the right hand pages…if – as you are reading a right hand page – you realize that you’ve missed something in the story you can easily read the left hand page that’s facing you. I got through some pretty tedious reading assignments in grad school that way. Have used it since for books I’m not enjoying, but feel compelled to finish.

I don’t struggle with books that are a chore. If the book is good, it flies by no matter how long, for example James Michener’s Hawaii is a fast read and more recently 11/23/63 by Stephen King is a page turner but I do prefer ebooks so I don’t have to hold a big book.

I just did that! Over 1000 pages. I just kept plugging along, but I did come to the conclusion it was 200 pages too long! Took me a week which is long for me. Being retired gives me lots of reading time.

I have a book I bought in 2008, I finally started it for the 4th time in 2015, and read it all the way through, mostly on a camping trip. Finally relaxed in to the story and thoroughly enjoyed it, so before I knew it, it was over and I was wanting more. I haven’t read very much since I was a teenager, but I used to be so eager to see how it ended I would skip to the end and then go back and it was never as satisfying. I have done the same thing with certain series on Netflix, or watched a part of a pilot and given up because it wasn’t exciting yet. Movies, too, I shut off. I am learning to be more patient! The Big Sick is one movie that started slow and wound up being mindblowingly good. Oh and the book was Love inthe Time of Cholera.
I don’t usually admit this but it took me two go rounds to finish A 100 Years of Solitude. I was finding it challenging then started from the beginning years later and happily finished.

If it’s a book I don’t love, but am determined to finish, I tend to treat it like a homework assignment. Give myself a reasonable pages per day goal – while also treating myself to a book I love at the same time.
Why would you ever devote that much time to a book you don’t love?? There are so many books to love out there…

If you love it, keep on reading! If not, stop! Life is too short and my to read list is too long to keep wasting time on books I don’t love

When I tackle big books like that, I try to read in Kindle so the weight and length aren’t as intimidating. I also don’t pressure myself about how long it’s taking. I might have another book from an entirely different genre to read at the same time to give me some respite.
Unpaid dishwashing should be recognized as a human rights violation.
Why bother? If it’s a struggle, move on to a good book.
If you have to read it, clock yourself on how many pages you read per hour. Budget your time accordingly.
For school, get the reading lists for courses asap and read the big bricks over break. Write a running summary across the top margins. Draw lines in yellow highlighter down the side margins by important paragraphs. Use that for review.
I love huge books!
Don’t expect to read it all in one sitting. Put that our of your mind. Plan to read for 1-2 hours a day, whatever your schedule allows. If you know your reading speed you can plot it out, ending at chapter endings, etc. But mostly just don’t plan on reading it in a whole day.
Also, keep notes at the end of chapters or underline so you can return to important passages later. One of the greatest pleasures is to get to the end of that tome and be able to say, “I did it. I read the whole thing.”
A woman in my book group always figured how many pages a day we had to read in order to finish in 30days. It was helpful.

The Nix is over 1000 pages long–and the author makes fun of himself for writing a 1000 page book toward the end of the book through the professor character. He’s working on this book, and asks, “Who would read a book that’s 1000 pages long?” And of course, the irony is that I’m sitting and reading a book that over 1000 pages long! Fun!

I could not finish it. I just did not like and couldnot relate to, or care about, the characters.
Enjoy it. If you do, the read goes quickly and the end is mourned. Don’t enjoy the book and every page is insurmountable.

Do you like the book? It shouldn’t be hard to finish a long book if you are enjoying it. If the book is dragging and all you can see is how long it is, give it up and choose a different book. Life is too short to spend time on books you don’t enjoy.

I’ve had books that I’ve read for Book Club that were slow going. I set goals and put a bookmark in the book to mark my each day’s goal reading toward the bookmark.
Is the story worth it?? And not bcoz everyone says it is.. But do you really feel like you should read this story. Once you are engrossed into it, 1000 pages also does not matter.

I took a class in college on Victorian novels—GURL I FEEL YOU. The shortest book on the syllabus was Jane Eyre, at 400 pages. My method is just to break it down into sections, halving the page count. So for Jane Eyre, you go from 400 to 200 to 100 to 50 to 25. Use chapter breaks as pause points if/when they fit into those page brackets. So at each increment you can give yourself a little break or reward for getting that far. Hope this helps!

I have picked up audio version and alternated reading and listening. I read book while at home and continue story on audio while in the car. Kept me going. That’s how I read Hamilton and East of Eden.
