Chicken Parmesan Baked Pasta Recipe (1)

Make sure to repin this recipe

This week has been CRAZY – there are just so many things happening with the site recently and my family ( all good — but still crazy) that I knew I needed to make a VERY easy casserole – something my family just heat up on their own without my help

I have a very funny story about cheese paper and a sandwich I might tell y’all one day – the moral of that story is that I needed to make dinner as EASY as possible

I loved this recipe since it was frugal and very simple to make – I really hope you enjoy it too

It is full of fresh basil, tomato sauce, pasta, and TONS of cheese — 3 Cups of cheese in all !

I could live in a cheese shop – there is a sweet little on in Solvang, CA —- my family had to pry me out of there

This is everything you will need – I told you it was easy 🙂

I bought a live basil plant – because the one from last year bit the dust and it was cheaper and fresher to buy the plant than to buy the basil in the herb section at my store

You could make this recipe gluten free by using gluten free pasta

Feel free to add in more veggies if you would like – you could even add Alfredo sauce instead of tomato

This recipe makes enough for 6 VERY hungry people – it is easily can be made into leftovers ( which is what usually happens with my casseroles )

You can cook your chicken any way you want – all I did was sear on the flattop and finish off in the oven till it reached 180 degrees then I shredded it in the food processor – you can use leftover chicken too — whatever floats your boat

I like to think of myself as a younger modern Italian chef. I like to cook my Italian food, but I like it to be easy. Saw this recipe and thought it was perfect! In the process of baking now. Hubby is very excited. Will let you know how it went! Thanks so much!

Made this the other night & it was wonderful! Thanks for the idea! 🙂

  • thao

Hi, how do I cook the chicken?

  • Taylor

I’m always in search of a good pasta recipe and this one didn’t let me down! I purchased frozen pre-shredded chicken and just fried it up (super easy and super quick!). It was such a great dish! I don’t think I would prep it earlier though, as I really feel the noodles would get soggy- but it still was fairly quick. I ended up using 1.5 cans of pasta sauce instead of 1, as 1 just wasn’t nearly enough. Overall, I was very impressed and will be enjoying left-overs for lunch today!

Can I freeze this? Made a tray (uncooked) to bring to a friend with a new baby, but now won’t make it there til Saturday. Should I cook it first or can I freeze it uncooked?

  • Dakota

Making this as I type! Hubby and his papa bear wanted Italian and all I could think about is that I always make Italian. Stuffed ricotta shells, lasagna, spaghetti, alfredo… I was running out of recipes! So I went on pinterest, naturally, and stumbled upon this! I wanted to lick my fingers once I combined everything together in the pot! Making this with homemade breadsticks and it will be DELISH. Thanks so much!

  • Francesca

Can I make this the day before and then keep it in the fridge for a day before cooking it?

  • Sami Sue

Have this in the oven right now, and my apartment smells AMAZING!!!! I breaded the chicken in seasoned breadcrumbs first to make it more authentic chicken parm, and added red pepper flakes with the other seasoning. Can’t wait until my fella gets home so we can eat!

  • Megan

Looks yummy! Did I read a cup of Basil right? I just made this and thought it sounded like a lot so I wanted to double check. Thanks!

    • Sara

      Yep!

  • Dustan

I premade this for tonight. I used spiral tri pasta. (don’t fully cook pasta!) Breaded chicken strips, I home made them just like I would Chicken Parmesan. Then cut into pieces. Though I baked them. Put into fridge until ready. I can’t wait to dig in!!

  • Ashley

Quick Question! I am just learning to cook and I need a little clarification. The recipe calls for tomato sauce. Am I supposed to use tomato paste or tomato sauce for this recipe? Thank you so much for your help! 🙂

    • Tracy

If it says sauce, use sauce. Tomato paste is very different.

how do you cook the chicken

  • Marta

To cook I would just cube the chicken meat up put cooking oil in a skillet and cook till no longer pink inside. Also, someone asked about tomato paste or sauce, the recipe calls for you favorite Spaghetti sauce, such as Ragu or Prego. But I don’t recommend just plain tomato sauce.

  • Marta

Hmm I Lied it does call for tomato sauce but I truly belive that to be an error because you can see by the photo she was using Spaghetti sauce.

  • Kim Kirby

Made the chicken Parmesan baked pasta and it is delish! I added fresh mushrooms and used rotisserie chicken (pulled). Thanks for the recipe!

  • Melanie

I use diced chicken and bread it instead of shredded chicken. It gives it more of a traditional chicken parm feel (and I don’t have a food processor and shredded chicken with forks is the bane of my existence!)

  • Ali

I made this, but used chunks of chicken, and I mixed the pasta with the ssuce. My family loved it. Thanks for the recipe!

  • Kathy

Where does the garlic come in?

  • Jackie

So so sooooooo yummy!! My whole family loved it!!! Even the picky 11 yr. old son!! Definitely becoming one of our weeknight dinners!! Thanks for the awsome recipe!!

  • Ellen

This was soooo good. I’ve been on a meatball kick lately and I think next time I’m gonna skip the chicken for meatballs. I make my lunches ahead for the week and this was super easy and quick to make and reheated up nicely. Next time though, meatballs.

  • Jessica

    It was okay nothing special

  • Ann Johnson

I made this yesterday and it was really good. It was quick, easy and everybody loved it. Will definitely make this again. This is a keeper.

  • Angela

1 full cup of basil? Isn’t that going to be too much? But I’ll try it anyways! Thanks.

  • Maria Miller

I added cooked mushrooms and onions, gave it that extra kick. Next time I will add extra sauce. It was a bit dry with one jar of sauce . Great recipe ! Thank you !

  • Megan

    Can you use rotisserie chicken?

  • Friday Favorites – 03232018 | Mrs. Myles

[…] This is cool for a couple of reasons, namely that it costs a lot less than those pre-portioned packages, and it lasts a lot longer. Once you open the container, you’ve got a month to figure out how to use up the rest of it. I like to add it to pasta sauces and sprinkle it on pizza, in addition to finding other recipes that call for fresh basil (here’s another one I like — Chicken Parmesan Bake). […]

I have made this three times now using Rotisserie chicken! I am hooked and my boyfriend loves it! Thank you for the great meal!

What’s the best way to freeze this meal?

Does anyone know if it freezes and reheats well?

FAQs

What kind of pasta goes with chicken parmesan? ›

A thicker, stout pasta shape, like a ridged rigatoni, works well with chicken parmesan because it matches the heft and satisfying texture of the protein. The sauce is also able to cling to the ridges on the surface of the pasta and become a vehicle for aromatics, like crushed garlic and fresh herbs.

What is the difference between chicken parmesan and chicken parmigiana? ›

Brace yourself for this one—they're the same dish! Chicken Parmesan and chicken Parmigiana are just different names for the same exact recipe. And, with a name like “chicken Parmigiana”, you might assume that this recipe is Italian. While it has roots in Italy (in a way), chicken Parmesan is all-American.

Does chicken parm always come with noodles? ›

In the United States and Canada, chicken parmesan is often served as a main course, and sometimes with a side of, or on top of pasta. Many restaurants also offer chicken parm sandwiches.

What can I use instead of egg for parmesan crusted chicken? ›

Instead of the egg, Moskowitz recommends a mix of cornstarch and water, which, when stirred together, forms a slurry. It, too, is an effective glue, and you may even notice more crispness to, say, your chicken parm. This would also be another good scenario for a liquid vegan substitute.

What not to put with parmesan? ›

You see, in Italy, Parmesan cheese is reserved for pasta dishes with tomato-based sauces, cream sauces, and meat-based dishes. Adding Parmesan cheese to a seafood-based dish, like spaghetti with clams, is a big no-no. It's like adding ketchup to a steak or pineapple on a pizza – it just doesn't belong!

Why is mozzarella used on chicken parmesan? ›

Slices of fresh mozzarella melted over the browned chicken breasts and simmered marinara sauce add moist, soft texture and milky flavor.

What goes good with chicken parmesan? ›

Typical sides would be linguine or spaghetti with the same sauce, and some kind of green vegetables, like zucchini (for its Italian aesthetic). Green salad is a good accompaniment, too.

Is chicken parmesan better with mozzarella or provolone? ›

The use of the parmesan, mozzarella and provolone together leads to a really nice balance of cheesy flavor as opposed to just using mozzarella, which is how I have made it in the past. This will definitely be my favorite “go to” Chicken Parmigiana recipe for now on.

What do you usually eat with chicken parmesan? ›

Chicken parmesan is traditionally served with a good pasta cooked al dente, as always. If you or your guests prefer rice, serve it with a good brown or saffron rice.

What goes best with chicken parmesan? ›

Salad: A crisp, refreshing salad can balance the richness of the Chicken Parm. Salads are always a good idea for chicken parmesan sides. You could pair it with a simple Green Salad, a Classic Caesar Salad or if you want something with lots of flavor you can try my That Good Salad recipe!

Is chicken parm served with pasta in Italy? ›

Despite being a staple of Italian-American cuisine, “chicken parmesan” is nowhere to be found in Italy. Instead, Italians nosh on parmigiana – eggplant layered with tomato sauce and cheese.

What pasta to eat with what sauce? ›

As a general rule, pair the heartier sauces with the wider noodles: Wide ribbons like pappardelle pair well with rich, meaty sauces while the thinner flat noodles, like fettuccine or linguine, are best paired with simple cream sauces like Alfredo or delicate proteins like seafood.
