"Mako Mermaids" is a spin-off of Australian teen drama staple "H2O: Just Add Water." Like that mothership series, itgives its mermaids legs — when on land, anyway — but keeps the mythological creatures' classic affinity for water and ardent love of humans intact. While "H2O: Just Add Water" centers around three human girls who accidentally turn into mermaids, "Mako Mermaids" (titled "Mako: Island of Secrets" in Australia) returns to the mystical Mako Island, where teenage boy Zac (Chai Hansen) is transformed into a merman via the mystical Moon Pool.

This is a complex situation. The three young mermaids charged with guarding the Moon Pool are cast out by their pod for allowing Zac to splash his way into merhood. They take to land to try and figure out how to take Zac's newfound water powers and fish tail away. Zac, meanwhile, must deal with the fact that whenever he gets wet, he reveals his fishy nature. What's a teen supposed to do?

Our young heroes learn and grow over the course of the first four seasons of "Mako Mermaids." But it's been quite a while since we spent time in their ocean. Will they ever return for a Season 5? Maybe — but maybe not. This is everything we know about the possibility of "Mako Mermaids" Season 5.

When will Mako Mermaids Season 5 be released?

There is no news yet as to whether or not "Mako Mermaids" will be renewed for a Season 5. In fact, "Season 5" is a bit of a misnomer — the show technically only has three seasons, but Netflix split Season 2 into two parts. Thus, the numbers read differently on Netflix. The question remains, regardless: Will the series be renewed for additional episodes?

News on that front has been pretty quiet since the last episodes aired in 2016. Creator Jonathan M. Shiff, who also created "H2O: Just Add Water," tweeted in 2015 that there would be a movie following Season 4, but that film seems to be suspended indefinitely. Shiff, meanwhile, has been busy producing "The Bureau of Magical Things." If "Mako Mermaids" suddenly gained a whole lot of attention, that might be enough to gain it a new season. But until something like that happens, the radio silence on a potential Season 5 is likely to continue.

What is the plot of Mako Mermaids Season 5?

Season 4 of "Mako Mermaids" ends with the revelation that the water dragon threatening our heroes is actually Zac and Mimmi's mother, Nerissa (Tasneem Roc), magically cursed to take that fearsome form. With her entrance into the series, a fifth season would have plenty of material to draw from. Her relationship with her children could take center stage, as could her history with their father. It's even possible that he could be brought back as well.

The writers would also likely explore the conflict between Nerissa and the pod. There's more story to explore with the mermen too, especially once Zac and Mimmi learn more from Nerissa. Moreover, an environmentally-focused storyline could also be interesting. As heat waves blast the globe, raising sea temperatures all over the world, such a plot could make the series even more relevant.

While Season 1 of "Mako Mermaids" focuses on new merman Zac and mermaids Sirena (Amy Ruffle), Nixie (Ivy Latimer), and Lyla (Lucy Fry), the cast expands and changes over the course of the following seasons. Most notably, Nixie and Lyla leave, while mermaids Mimmi (Allie Bertram) and Ondina (Isabel Durant) become permanent fixtures of the series.

A fifth season of "Mako Mermaids" could get by with a few changes to its cast, as characters have come and gone before. But lead actor Chai Hansen would need to come back as Zac — he ties the entire show together. Since "Mako Mermaids" released itslast season in 2016, he's been busy with roles on other series, including "Shadowhunters," "Night Sky," and "The New Legends of Monkey."

Alongside Hansen, fans could probably expect his girlfriend Evie (Gemma Forsyth) and longtime friend Cam (Dominic Deutscher) to return, as well as his mermaid sister Mimmi and her new boyfriend Chris (Taylor Glockner). Perhaps they could also bring in a guest star from "H2O: Just Add Water," like they do near the end of season 4 with Rikki (Cariba Heine).

Who is directing Mako Mermaids Season 5?

"Mako Mermaids"was created by Jonathan M. Shiff, who also serves as an executive producer alongside Julia Adams, Cherrie Bottger, and a number of other names. The series' directors are a largely different bunch of people, however. A handful of folks have helmed one episode each, including Tom Hooper and Wade Savage. But two men stand out from the pack, each having directed roughly half of the series: Evan Clarry and Grant Brown.

Clarry helmed 28 episodes of "Mako Mermaids," while Brown tackled 27. If the show were to return for a Season 5, it's likely they'd be back as well. They've both been pretty busy since the last season debuted, however. Clarry has directed multiple episodes of "The Bureau of Magical Things" and "Rock Island Mysteries," and written multiple installments of the former series. Brown's schedule has been absolutely packed: He's directed episodes of "Love Child," "House Husbands," "Janet King," "Reef Break," "Harrow, "Troppo," and "Last King of the Cross," among other series. Would either director be able to make time for a fifth season of "Mako Mermaids"? It's possible — but it's definitely not set in stone.

What will Mako Mermaids Season 5 be rated?

"Mako Mermaids" is about teenagers being the goofy, complicated, and dramatic creatures they are — with or without fins and magical water powers. However, this doesn't mean it's full of PG-13-related hijinks. The oceanside series is actually rated TV-G. This puts it a notch above TV-Y and TV-Y7 programming, as far as maturity goes; those labels are generally applied to ultra-kiddie fare and shows for kids age 7 and up, respectively. But TV-G series are still generally okay for all ages to watch. They don't contain much in the way of violence, swear words, or adult situations. Odds are, Season 5 would earn the same rating.

Notably, TV-G shows don't always explicitly cater to little ones — case in point, "Mako Mermaids" is about teens. This means the show might be a little boring to a youngster who couldn't care less about adolescents and their problems. On the other hand, some children look forward to growing up. Those kids might enjoy the aspirational adventures of the "Mako Mermaids" gang.

"Mako Mermaids" Overview

"Mako Mermaids" is a spin-off of the Australian teen drama series "H2O: Just Add Water." It follows a similar premise, where mermaids gain legs on land but retain their love for water and humans. The show centers around Zac, a teenage boy who becomes a merman after being transformed by the mystical Moon Pool on Mako Island. The story revolves around Zac's struggle to control his newfound powers and the three young mermaids who were cast out by their pod for allowing him to become a merman.

Possibility of Season 5

As of now, there is no news regarding the renewal of "Mako Mermaids" for a Season 5. The show technically has three seasons, but Netflix split Season 2 into two parts, causing the numbering to appear differently on the platform. The creator of the series, Jonathan M. Shiff, mentioned the possibility of a movie following Season 4, but it seems to be suspended indefinitely. Shiff has been busy producing another series called "The Bureau of Magical Things." Unless "Mako Mermaids" gains significant attention, the chances of a Season 5 remain uncertain.

Potential Plot of Season 5

At the end of Season 4, it is revealed that the water dragon threatening the main characters is actually Zac and Mimmi's mother, Nerissa, who is magically cursed. A fifth season could focus on the relationship between Nerissa and her children, as well as her history with their father. Additionally, an environmentally-focused plot could be introduced, addressing the rising sea temperatures and their impact on the mermaids' world.

While the cast of "Mako Mermaids" has changed over the seasons, lead actor Chai Hansen, who plays Zac, would likely need to return for a fifth season, as he ties the show together.
